Types of Civil Engineering and Related Occupations

Multiple disciplines exist within civil engineering. Civil engineering students often take the same courses the first three years of college and spend their final year taking classes that specialize in one of the first eight disciplines listed below. Civil Engineering Technicians usually take just two years of courses (see Q&A below for further information). Urban planning, the last discipline listed, is a field related to civil engineering; urban planners work hand-in-hand with civil engineers, and civil engineers often play a role in urban planning or may even specialize in both fields.
